ORANGE CROSS Highly stable cruciform parachute
Background:
When military units drop heavy equipment from a Hercules transport aircraft over an operational area, one thing counts above anything else-the impact has to be gentle. The equipment still has to work afterwards.
The same is true for paraglider pilots who use reserve equipmentthe landing should not have an impact.
Our products should not just save your life; they should also protect you from injury. Here we return again to the military. Traditional round canopies, which have always been used in paraglider flying, swing. If you hang a military vehicle from a round canopy, it would certainly not look the same once it had landed. Even though large round canopies reduce sinking speed in paraglider flying, there is still a risk of injury due to swinging movements.
Whilst looking for solutions our development team came across military cruciform parachutes. These were four sided canopies with opening slits at all four corners that sink a little more quickly with the same surface area, but are also more resistant to swinging.
The increase in sinking is compensated for by using a little more material. When sizing the surface area we ensured that the ORANGE CROSS sinks at considerably lower speeds than round canopies of comparable weight. Thanks to our sensible light-weight design and know-how at our production centre in Croatia, the ORANGE CROSS reserve equipment only weighs 1.45 kg (34 square meter surface area) and has sensational sink rates.
The opening time is the same as for previous round canopies.
Intended use:
Non steerable reserve systems can be recommended to anyone who wants maximum simplicity. The ability to steer (as with our ORANGE ST) can often be advantageous but is not strictly necessary.
In safety training we noticed that, in particular, the ability to steer was not noticeably useful for pilots without much experience. The reasons for this are that reserve systems are often deployed very late and there was not much time to steer. Additionally in extreme situations stress levels stopped people acting rationally.
As a rule of thumb the more experienced someone is, the more useful a steerable reserve system is. Leisure pilots and those with less experience will find the best possible protection with our ORANGE CROSS.
